Jake Kovnat is a director and member of the Directors Guild of America with over 15 years of experience creating emotionally grounded, cinematic commercials and documentaries. Drawn to real human stories, his films are known for natural performances and emotional truth, pairing strong visual craft with clarity, restraint, and impact.
He has directed national and international campaigns for brands including LinkedIn, TD, HP, McDonald’s, BMO, and Air Canada, collaborating with leading agencies such as Leo Burnett, BBDO, and McCann. His work has been recognized by The One Show, Marketing, Strategy, and the ADCC, and featured in publications including AdWeek and Shots.
Alongside commercial projects, Jake directs documentaries that explore adventure, identity, and human connection. His films have earned multiple Vimeo Staff Picks and screened at international film festivals, including On Days Like These We Must Surf, The Scroll of the Prophet Isaiah, and his latest feature documentary, Communal.
Born and raised in Rochester, New York, Jake studied cinema and philosophy at the University of Toronto, with additional studies in Hong Kong and Berlin. A dual US and Canadian citizen, he brings a globally informed perspective shaped by extensive international production experience across five continents.
